Meagan’s chance to make history with a sixth title
Vegan Athlete of the Year and twice World Champion Meagan Duhamel has returned to Skate Canada International with five wins behind her and the opportunity to make history.
Meagan and her partner Eric Radford have won five titles a record they shared with five other couples. This was an opportunity to take an unprecedented sixth win.
After some changes to their routine the pair decided to drop their throw triple Axel, a difficult decision because they were rare in completing it so successfully.
Meagan felt that it went well from the start.
“It was the first time we ever actually tried a triple Lutz combination ever in competition, and when we landed that, I could feel a surge of energy boil up. As we went into the throw quad, I had to force myself to calm down, because I know whenever I have a little too much energy, the throw gets a little too big. I think it pulled inside just a little bit, but I am really proud of the recovery to the side by side Salchows. We were trying a throw quad, so sometimes we are going to have stumbles and that just comes with a high-risk element.”
Meagan and Eric had a comfortable lead after the short programme and went into the long programme to score a total of 227.23, a lead of 18.99.
This places them on six wins, making them the leading title holders of all time.
