Figure Skating silver for vegan Meagan
Canadian pairs skater Meagan Duhamel has added to her Gold in the Canadian Nationals this year by winning a silver in the international Skate Canada competition.
Vegan Meagan and her partner Eric Radford knew the competition was goinf to be difficult so set some tough goals along the way.
“We wanted to get 60 for components from our long (program) by the end of the season and we just started with 62. It’s huge for us. Last year, when we skated our very best, we barely got (a total score of) 120. And now, we didn’t skate our very best – it was still good – and we’re at 126.”
They finished second behind a German pair.
The win gave Meagan a chance to talk to the Windsor Star in Canada about her veganism. Vegan since 2008, Meagan explained that when she switched to a plant based diet her weight quickly moved towards the ideal and has been easy to maintain.
“I never have to try and count my calories or think about what I’m eating, because I’m always eating healthy foods. I sleep better; I have a lot more energy. I have a lot less injuries, my skin is better. I haven’t noticed any negative effects from it.”
The couple were ranked fifth at the world championships last year, but are optimistic of a podium place next year.
